Vai
“It isn’t just gorgeous, it feels spiritually poignant, a reaffirmation of cultural identity and a showcase of the strength of women’s stories.”
RobertEbert.com
A portmanteau feature film made by nine female Pacific filmmakers
Vai is filmed in 9 different Pacific countries: Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Samoa, Niue and New Zealand. It is about the journey of empowerment through culture over the lifetime of one woman, Vai, played by a different indigenous actress in each of the Pacific countries. In each of these Pacific nations ‘vai’ means water.
